Where to Stay in Lyme Regis (and the Smart Alternative)

Sea view hotels, harbour inns, award-winning B&Bs and cottages - every option checked and honestly compared

Working out where to stay in Lyme Regis is mostly a problem of geography. The town is built on a hill: the harbour, the Cobb and the fossil beaches sit at the bottom, Broad Street climbs steeply away from the sea, and most of the beds sit somewhere on the slope between the two. Pick the wrong spot and every evening ends with a climb. Pick well and the harbour, the museums and the best fish and chips in west Dorset are all a level stroll away.

One thing to declare before we start: we host a holiday apartment in Weymouth, 30 miles east along the coast. That is 45 minutes away by car - nowhere near Lyme Regis, and we will not pretend otherwise. So this guide does the useful thing first: the town's own hotels, inns, B&Bs and cottages, each one checked as open and trading in August 2026. Then, for people planning a multi-stop Jurassic Coast trip rather than a Lyme-only break, we make the honest case for a mid-coast base - and declare our interest when we do.

The quick answer

Lyme Regis splits into three zones, plus two alternatives worth knowing about. The seafront and harbour end gives you sea views and level walking. Broad Street and the town centre put the restaurants on your doorstep. The top of the town trades a hill walk for parking and quiet. Charmouth, a few miles east, is the budget-and-fossils fallback. And Weymouth, mid-coast, is the base for people who want Lyme as one stop on a bigger trip.

The hotels: four that hold up

Lyme Regis does not do big chain hotels, which is part of its appeal. What it does have is a short list of independent hotels and inns that have been looking after visitors for generations. Four stand out, and all four were open and taking bookings when we checked this month:

  • Alexandra Hotel - a 25-bedroom boutique hotel in a Georgian dower house on the hillside above the bay, with gardens, a restaurant and a two-minute walk down into the town centre. The special-occasion choice, and the sea views across Lyme Bay from its lawns are the best in town.
  • Royal Lion Hotel - a 30-room inn at the top end of Broad Street with an indoor pool and jacuzzi, sea views towards the coast, and a proper welcome for dogs (water and treats on request). The most facilities of any stay in the town centre.
  • The Mariners Hotel - a converted 17th-century coaching inn with 15 en-suite rooms, a restaurant built on locally sourced produce, and gardens overlooking the water. Dog friendly, to the point of publishing its own guide to dog days out in Lyme.
  • Rock Point Inn - nine rooms beside the harbour at the seaward end of Broad Street, several looking straight out to sea, run by St Austell Brewery. Dog-friendly rooms cost £20 per dog per stay, and the pub downstairs means dinner, a pint and bed under one roof.

The trade-offs of the town centre

Two things to know before you book. First, supply is small - a handful of hotels serving a famous town means summer weekends sell out months ahead. Second, parking is not a given: not every central property has spaces, and the public car parks fill by mid-morning in season. Ask about parking when you book, not when you arrive.

B&Bs and guest houses

Lyme's B&B scene punches far above the town's size, and two names lead it:

  • Dorset House - the town's most decorated B&B: four-time winner of Best Bed and Breakfast at the Dorset Tourism Awards, AA 5-star Gold, and holder of England's Best Breakfast title from the AA in 2022. It fully reopened in August 2026 after refurbishment - while its online booking system returns, availability is handled by email, so plan ahead.
  • Charnwood Guest House - an all-ensuite guest house on Woodmead Road with free on-site parking, which is genuinely rare in Lyme, and a 5-10 minute walk along the River Lym into the old town and beaches. The practical choice for anyone arriving by car.

Behind those two sits a deep bench of small guest houses and rooms-above-restaurants across the town. If neither of the above has space, the Visit Dorset listings for Lyme Regis are the most reliable place to trawl - they only carry places that are trading.

Holiday cottages and self-catering

For families and week-long stays, self-catering usually beats a hotel room in Lyme. The town has a large stock of holiday cottages and seaview apartments - fisherman's cottages in the old town, apartments along Marine Parade, and larger houses up the hill - listed through the town's own letting agencies and the national cottage sites. Many take dogs, which matters here more than most places: Monmouth Beach, East Cliff Beach and Church Cliff Beach all welcome dogs year round.

The catch is the same as the hotels, amplified: the best-positioned cottages book out furthest ahead. Dorset's own tourism plan reports that 36% of the county's domestic overnight visits squeeze into July and August alone - see our Dorset tourism statistics page for the full picture - so for a school-holiday week by the Cobb, book the winter before.

Charmouth: the fossil-first alternative

If fossils are the point of the trip, consider basing a few miles east in Charmouth instead. The cliffs between the two towns are the richest stretch of the coast for ammonites and belemnites, and the beach at Charmouth is often better for finding them than Lyme Regis itself, because its cliffs are more active. The Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre runs fossil walks and a free exhibition, and the village carries a spread of B&Bs, holiday parks and cottages at gentler prices than Lyme's seafront.

The trade-off is evenings. Charmouth is a village: a handful of places to eat, and the pull of Lyme's restaurants means driving or taking the bus into town and back. For a fossil weekend with children it is a strong pick; for a week of long dinners, stay in Lyme itself.

What staying in Lyme Regis involves

A few practicalities that decide whether your booking works in real life. The hill is the big one: Broad Street climbs steeply from the seafront, and a room at the top of town means a genuine climb home after dinner. If mobility is a concern, book the harbour end and check for steps.

Parking is the second. The main car parks are Holmbush at the top of the town and the small seafront car park by the Cobb, which fills early - in summer, arriving before 10am is advisable. Accommodation with its own space saves you that race every day.

And getting there: Lyme Regis has no railway station - the nearest is Axminster, a few miles inland, with buses into town. Once you are in, though, you barely need the car: the town, the Cobb, the fossil beaches and the museums are all walkable. For what to do once you arrive - fossil hunting, the Cobb, Mary Anning's legacy and the best of the town - see our full guide to visiting Lyme Regis.

Planning a multi-stop Jurassic Coast trip? Read this first

Here is where we declare our interest, and the geography that comes with it. Lyme Regis sits at the western end of the Jurassic Coast. The other headline sites - Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove, Corfe Castle - cluster towards the east. Stay in Lyme for a week and every one of those is a long drive; the arch at Durdle Door alone means crossing most of the coast and back in a day.

Weymouth sits in the middle. From there, Durdle Door is a 22-minute drive one way and Lyme Regis 45 minutes the other - the whole World Heritage Site within an hour, plus a three-mile sandy beach, a mainline rail station and more evening restaurants than any other town on this coast. That is why our guide to where to stay near Durdle Door reaches the same conclusion from the opposite direction: for multi-stop trips, base mid-coast and day-trip outwards.

Our place, and the honest friction

This is ours, so judge the facts rather than the adjectives. The Escape is a 2-bedroom apartment sleeping 5 in Weymouth town centre, 100m from Weymouth Beach, rated 4.9 from 124 Airbnb reviews. Dogs are welcome at £25 per pet per stay, and booking direct saves 15% compared with Airbnb - the live price table and calendar show real rates for your dates.

The friction, stated plainly: The Escape is 45 minutes from Lyme Regis. If your whole holiday is Lyme - fossils every morning, the Cobb every evening - stay in Lyme Regis, and use the list above. Choose Weymouth only if Lyme is one stop of several. That is the whole pitch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best area of Lyme Regis to stay in?

The seafront and harbour end for sea views and level walking, Broad Street and the town centre for restaurants on the doorstep, and the top of town for parking and quiet. Lyme Regis is steep, so anyone who struggles with hills should book low and central - the climb back up Broad Street is a workout.

Which places to stay in Lyme Regis have sea views?

The Alexandra Hotel sits in gardens on the hillside overlooking Lyme Bay, Rock Point Inn has sea view rooms beside the harbour, and the Royal Lion Hotel on Broad Street looks out towards the Jurassic Coast. The Mariners Hotel has gardens and a bar with sea views a short walk from the front.

Is Lyme Regis dog friendly?

Very. Monmouth Beach, East Cliff Beach and Church Cliff Beach welcome dogs all year round, and several of the town's best stays take dogs - including the Royal Lion Hotel, the Mariners Hotel and Rock Point Inn, which charges £20 per dog per stay.

Does Lyme Regis have a train station?

No. The nearest railway station is Axminster, a few miles inland, with bus connections into town. If you are relying on trains for a wider Jurassic Coast trip, Weymouth has a mainline station and makes the easier car-free base.

Is parking difficult in Lyme Regis?

In summer, yes. The main car parks are Holmbush at the top of the town and the small seafront car park by the Cobb, which fills early - arriving before 10am is advisable in peak season. If you are driving, accommodation with its own parking, like Charnwood Guest House, is worth prioritising.

How far is Lyme Regis from Weymouth?

30 miles - about 45 minutes by car via the A35, passing through Bridport and the west Dorset hills. It is one of the prettiest drives in the county, which is why plenty of visitors base mid-coast in Weymouth and visit Lyme Regis as a full-day trip.

How many nights do you need in Lyme Regis?

Two nights covers the essentials: the Cobb, a guided fossil walk, the museums and a fish and chip evening on Marine Parade. Add a third for Charmouth and the coast path. If the plan is the whole Jurassic Coast rather than one town, a mid-coast base beats adding nights at the western end.

Is it better to stay in Lyme Regis or Weymouth for the Jurassic Coast?

Stay in Lyme Regis if the trip is Lyme Regis - fossils, the Cobb and a small-town break. Stay in Weymouth if you want the whole coast: it sits mid-way along it, with Durdle Door 22 minutes one way and Lyme Regis 45 the other, plus a three-mile sandy beach and the biggest choice of evening restaurants on this stretch.
