Where to Stay Near Lulworth Cove: Every Option, Honestly Compared

Three village inns, a clifftop holiday park, camping and Weymouth - every base compared by a Weymouth host

Lulworth Cove has a problem most beauty spots would envy: far more people want to sleep beside it than it has beds. The village behind the cove, West Lulworth, holds three inns of 12 rooms each, a holiday park on the neighbouring clifftop, and little else. So anyone weighing up where to stay near Lulworth Cove is choosing between roughly 36 village rooms, a field of pods and pitches, and the towns further out - and on summer weekends the village rooms go first.

Full disclosure before we start: we host The Escape, a holiday apartment in Weymouth, 20 minutes from the cove - so we have an interest in this question, and we will declare it when we get to it. But this guide covers every option, starting with the ones that beat us on distance. For what to do once you arrive - Stair Hole, the Fossil Forest, the walking routes - see our full guide to visiting Lulworth Cove.

The quick answer

Four bases put you within reach of the cove. West Lulworth village has the closest beds and the only walk-to-the-water options. Durdle Door Holiday Park covers camping, pods and caravans a mile west. Independent campsites handle the budget end. Weymouth is the furthest of the four - and still the base we would pick for most trips longer than a night or two, for reasons this guide sets out honestly.

The one-line verdict: closest is the village; the most complete trip for most people is Weymouth.

The village inns: the closest beds to Lulworth Cove

West Lulworth is a one-street village folded into the hills directly behind the cove. Nothing sits on the beach itself - the cove is protected landscape with no seafront hotels - so these three inns, each a short walk from the water, are as close as a bed gets. We checked all three in August 2026; all are open and taking bookings, and all three take dogs.

  • Lulworth Cove Inn - a Hall & Woodhouse pub with 12 rooms, some with sea views, sitting on the road down to the cove with the South West Coast Path at its door. Dogs are welcomed with water bowls and treats. The closest of the three to the water, and the obvious choice if you want dinner, a pint and bed within sight of the bay.
  • The Castle Inn - a 16th-century thatched Butcombe inn on Main Road, with 12 boutique rooms and a terraced garden looking towards the cove. Genuinely soft on dogs: £20 per dog, biscuits on the bar, sausages at breakfast. Not every room takes dogs, so say so when you book.
  • The Lodge at Lulworth - a 12-room boutique hotel with a seafood-led restaurant and bar, rebranded from the former Lulworth Lodge. Every room is dog friendly, which is rare at this end of the market, and the coast path runs close by.

A short distance further back in the village, the Limestone Hotel offers a quieter countryside alternative about half a mile from the cove. And a word on a confusing name: the Durdle Door Hotel is in West Lulworth near the cove, not at the arch - we cover it in our guide to where to stay near Durdle Door.

The trade-offs of staying in the village

West Lulworth regulars would tell you the same things we will. The village is tiny: evening dining is essentially the inns themselves plus a couple of cafes, and tables book out on summer nights. The cove-side cafes are daytime only. There is no supermarket - stock up before you arrive. You pay a premium for the postcode, and with only around 36 inn rooms behind one of the most photographed bays in England, summer weekends sell out months ahead. Dorset's own tourism plan reports that 36% of domestic overnight visits land in July and August, and nowhere feels that squeeze more than a three-inn village. For one or two nights built around the cove, none of this matters. For a week, it starts to.

Durdle Door Holiday Park (camping, pods and caravans)

Durdle Door Holiday Park sits on the Lulworth Estate clifftop a mile west of the cove - about 30 minutes on foot along the coast path, or a short drive. It offers static caravans, camping pods, glamping cabins and touring and camping pitches, open from 1 March to 2 January each year. The camping pods sleep up to four and take dogs, and the park has its own bar-restaurant and a small shop. Its headline act is the other landmark: Durdle Door is a ten-minute walk down from the park, which makes this the only place in the area where you can sleep between both icons and reach each on foot.

The honest fit: this is the best-value bed this close to the coast, and the best address going for campers, van tourers and sunrise photographers. It is also, unambiguously, a holiday park - caravans and pitches, not boutique comfort - and it closes from early January to the end of February. Book it for the position.

Camping near Lulworth Cove

Beyond the holiday park's own pitches, camping directories list more than eight campsites within a few miles of this stretch of coast, from basic farm fields to serviced glamping. Inland villages like Wool and East Lulworth hold most of them, all within a 15-minute drive of the cove.

One rule matters more than any pitch review: the cove's car park is not a campsite. The main Lulworth Estate car park stays open 24 hours and permits overnight parking, but sleeping in vehicles is not allowed. If you are touring in a van, book a proper pitch - the closest are on the clifftop at the holiday park.

What a stay near Lulworth Cove involves (the logistics nobody mentions)

Wherever you sleep, the cove works the same way. The Lulworth Estate car park at the top of the village charges around £8-10 for a full day, paid by card or the JustPark app, and it fills quickly in summer - before 10am on peak weekends. From the car park it is a 5-10 minute walk downhill to the water. The beach is shingle, not sand, and there are no lifeguards. The visitor centre is free and worth 20 minutes on the geology alone.

Staying in the village removes the parking problem entirely - guests walk down while day-trippers circle the car park. That is the strongest single argument for a West Lulworth bed. The counterargument is everything else: eating options, shops, wet-weather plans and the rest of the coast, all of which live in the towns. Which brings us to ours.

Staying in Weymouth (the smart base for most trips)

Let's be exact, because this is our patch: Weymouth is not next to Lulworth Cove. It is a 20-minute drive, 12 miles east along the B3070 through the Purbeck countryside. If that drive is a dealbreaker, stay in the village and skip this section.

What Weymouth is: a proper seaside town where everything except the cove is on your doorstep. A three-mile sandy beach - a real contrast to Lulworth's shingle - harbourside restaurants by the dozen, supermarkets, and parking you can find at 6pm. It also sits mid-point on the Jurassic Coast, which turns one base into a whole-coast trip: Lulworth Cove 20 minutes, Durdle Door 22, Corfe Castle 30, Lyme Regis 45. And Weymouth has a mainline rail station, with the seasonal X54 bus running towards Lulworth Cove every two hours daily in summer 2026 - so a car-free cove trip is genuinely possible from here. In summer, sightseeing boats also run from Weymouth harbour along the coast past Durdle Door, from £27.50 for a two-hour cruise (August 2026).

Our pick: The Escape, Weymouth town centre

The Escape holiday let exterior - Georgian building in Weymouth town centre, 20 minutes from Lulworth Cove

This is ours, so judge the facts rather than the adjectives. The Escape is a 2-bedroom apartment sleeping 5, in Weymouth town centre 100m from the beach, rated 4.9 from 124 Airbnb reviews. Dogs are welcome at £25 per pet per stay, and booking direct saves 15% compared with Airbnb - check the live availability calendar for real prices on your dates.

Who it suits: families and couples doing 2-4 nights on the coast, who want the cove one morning and a walkable town - beach, restaurants, harbour - every other day. Who it does not suit: if the whole point of your trip is stepping out of the door onto the coast path before breakfast, a village inn beats us, full stop. The cove is a 20-minute drive from our front door, and no Weymouth property should tell you otherwise.

Village or Weymouth: which should you pick?

This is the real decision for most readers, and the honest answer runs both ways. If the trip IS Lulworth Cove - a walking weekend, a first visit built around the bay, dinner in a thatched pub and the coast path at dawn - stay in the village and accept the small-village trade-offs. If the cove is one highlight of a longer coast holiday, base in Weymouth and day-trip everything. The same handful of village beds serves Durdle Door too, so if the arch is your real target, read the sister guide to where to stay near Durdle Door before you book.
